About Us

Churn Creek Cellars is a local, family owned business. The principals are Layne and Denise McLean (formerly Denise Evans). We started our venture in viticulture and winemaking by planting a small vineyard on our property. We named it after our Basset Hounds, and it is known as Fat Basset Vineyards. Callahan and Highway are our two hounds, and they are well known in our neighborhood for their howling. We also have two Boxers (Vino and Nebbiolo), and a Boston Terrier (Syrah). The are all very good natured dogs.

The world famous Fat Basset wine labelThe wine that is made from our vineyard will have the Fat Basset label on it. All other wine we produce and bottle will feature the Churn Creek Cellars logo. We wanted it to be easy for our customers to know where the grapes that made the wine came from. Every drop we sell will be made by us. We do not purchase bulk wine, or shiners, and we never will. We purchase only bulk grapes. The growers we work with have very high standards, and we also help manage several of the area vineyards we receive grapes from.

Besides viticulture and wine, we stay busy with other activities. Denise tutors kids after school 3 days a week, and is working towards obtaining an additional teaching credential. Layne is busy, along with Morgan, coaching Freshman Girls Basketball in the winter months. He also teaches four courses (two in computer science, two in winemaking) for Shasta College. Ilani (G.I.S. studies) and Morgan (a recent Foothill High graduate) are both "full-time" students at Shasta College. "The Chief" and Mary volunteer at P.A.T.H. and also drive for Children's First in Tehama County. We are not a family that sits around, but we will slow down long enough to share a glass of wine with you.
